Oh to be a fox

With Harlen gone, it left Cassar and I alone as we stood in the dark chamber.

Cassar looked at me with a question in his eyes.

“He’s going to die anyways. He might as well be useful before he does.” I shrugged, explaining further. “All he will do is run back to the Fox Council, they’ll find out he tattled on them, then they will kill him. When they find out I stopped you from killing him and let him go, they will think I sympathize with them. Then they will underestimate my hatred for them causing them to slip. It’s simple.”

Cass gave me a baffled irritated look. “That’s not simple.”

“Sorry. To any creature with an average intelligence level, it’s simple.” I pointed out sarcastically.

Cassar narrowed his eyes. His sharp jaw twitching. “This may shock you, but your jokes are not that funny.”

“Who says I’m joking?” I teased

He gave me a flat look.

I flipped my hair over my shoulder. “Mama always told me to be clever as the devil, but twice as pretty.”

“And three times as arrogant.” Cassar mumbled.

I laughed, “Don’t be jealous.”

Cassar ignored my comment as I made a move to walk out of the cell covered in blood. His voice had me stopping in my tracts.

He was tense. His body rigid. His hands clenching and unclenching. His eyes scanning the room, refusing to look at me. He was trying to be causal but he had never been a good actor.

I raised a brow.

His words were too tight. “What did you mean when you said you lasted longer than him?”

I smirked. “Exactly what I said. I’ve been tortured so many times, I know how to do it well. And I don’t feel bad about it.”

“Who.” His words were so tense it was not a question. His fists clenched tightly.

I snorted. “More like who hasn’t.”

“I’ll kill them.”

I chuckled. “Don’t worry Cass, most of them are already dead. The rest will be.”

“With aconite?” His voice jagged.

It made me pause. I turned around to look him in the eyes.

It was funny how all it took was a look to know what a person had gone through. The same look I had whenever aconite was mentioned.

The shadow of pain but the confidence of overcoming it.

Cassar killed without a second thought. He could shatter bones. He ended lives. He was a powerful wolf. But aconite was kryptonite. And Cassar had felt the effect personally.

I titled my head up to look at him, a new fire burned in my veins. “Who used it on you?”

Cassar smirked, noticing my reaction. “It was a long time ago.”

I placed a hand on my hip. “That’s not what I asked.”

“They called my father the insane alpha for a reason.”

“To his own son?” I said through clenched teeth.

Cassar shrugged. “He was training me.”

“That’s not training. That’s torture.” I spit.

He smirked down at me. “Careful Vienna. I might think you actually care.”

I gagged, stepping past him. “Even you aren’t that stupid.”

A glint lit up his brown eyes, an annoying grin spread across his face.
